When You Were Small

Precious! Classic! When You Were Small is about a whimsical tale that a father tells his son at night before bed. Each night the son asks his father to tell him about when he was small. The father then embarks on fantastical tales about when his son was literally, small - a couple of inches small. Sounds like a great bedtime story and it is beautifully illustrated.

A friend of mine mentioned a yearly tradition she has with her children. Each year on their birthday's she buys a book that reflects something of the child at that age. Inside the book she writes a letter to her child detailing what the childs interests were, what he/she was like at that age, and why she thought the book she chose was appropriate for them at that time. Her children are now in their teens and off to college, but they have a collection of books that they cherish, and a heart-melting present from their mother.

I adopted this tradition in my family last year. This year, this is going to be the book I choose for my soon-to-be four year old. I'm also going to get it for my two year old, but save it for a year or so.
