Mattel Recall / No more Toys R Us for us...

The Mattel recall has really made me look a lot closer at the products we have accumulated in our house. When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I swore we would NEVER allow those plastic toys (toxic and loud) to enter our household. But somehow, those things did creap in. Mostly because it's easier. I live in the suburbs where charming eco-friendly toy boutiques are NOT on every (any) street corner. A trip to Toys R Us is fast and easy. A trip into the city is not. Convienience has crushed my values when it comes to the products I've allowed my children to come in contact with. I'm disappointed that I've let it come to this.

So... we are doing a widespread purging of plastic toys. We won't be able to get rid of it all at once. Somethings, like my daughters princess bike, will remain until they are naturally put to rest.

Along with the purging, new rules will be established. We will gently let our friends and family know that we are no longer accepting certain items. That no gift is really needed. That if they really want to give something, that we would prefer eco-friendly products, donations to our children's 529's, or that they donate to a charity in our children's names. For me, this will mean that I'll have to plan a little better - so that I don't need to do the fast and easy trip. It will mean that my kids will have fewer, but safer and better quality toys.

The first thing on my list to replace is the Dora Talking Doll house. This has been a HUGE favorite in our house. But it's the first item to go. Here's one alternative that I'm considering...

From Oompa Toys...

Selecta Casa Bella Dollhouse

via Oompa "designed and made in Germany. Made of solid wood with completely non-toxic, child-friendly paints and finishes."
